Jews observe Pentecost to commemorate God giving the Ten
Commandments on Mount Sinai 50 days after the Exodus, 50 days after Passover.
Christians
celebrate Pentecost to commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the
Apostles on Pentecost day 10 days after the Ascension of Jesus Christ, 50 days
after resurrection (Easter Sunday), as recorded in Acts 2:1-13.
Christians
do not talk much about Jews’ Pentecost but stress on God giving the Holy Spirit
to believers.
Christians celebrate Pentecost Sunday all over the world because :
1. To Christians, Pentecost is the fulfillment
of Prophesy made by Prophet Joel, thousands year before Jesus came in the world,
“And
afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons
and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream
dreams, your young men will see
visions.” (Joel
2:28)
On
Pentecost, God sent the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and they started
proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord.
2. To Christians, Pentecost is the fulfillment
of Prophesy made by John the Baptist that Jesus Christ will Baptist with the
Holy Spirit” “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes
one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He
(Jesus Christ) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” ( Matthew 3:11)
On
Pentecost, Jesus Christ baptized Apostles with the Holy Spirit. He will baptize
all true believers till He come again.
3. To Christians, Pentecost is the fulfillment
of the promised of Jesus Christ to Peter that He will build the Church through
Apostle Peter, And I tell you that you are Peter, and
on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not
overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18)
The
Holy Spirit indwelled Peter that through the speech of Peter, on that day three
thousand people believed in Jesus and the Church was born.
4. To Christians, Pentecost is the fulfillment
of the promised of Jesus Christ to His Disciples that He will send the Holy
Spirit as Advocate “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom
the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of
everything I have said to you.”(John 14:26NIV)
On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit started
guiding the Apostles in preaching the Gospel and will always guide all true believers
till the coming of Jesus Christ to bring them on last day.
5. To Christians, Pentecost is the fulfillment
of the promised of Jesus Christ to His Disciples that He will send the Holy
Spirit to give them strength ”But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.” (Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit strengthen all the
disciples that the timid disciples began to proclaim the Gospel with courage and today Christianity become the
largest population in the world, just after 2000 year of the death and
resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise the Lord.
How
will you celebrate or observe this Pentecost? Like Jews or Christian?
If
like Christian, God bless you with the eternal life in Jesus Christ and the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
God
bless you.
